I've been going to Bergamot a few times a year since it opened about four years ago (five now? how time flies). It's frequently adjusted for seasonality and local availability.

The desserts are deservedly famous. The service is hands-down the best in Boston, and frankly, I can't think of competitors elsewhere, either--certainly not in this surprisingly affordable price point.

Wines are well curated and unique. The list can be tough to navigate even for a more knowledgeable drinker (not long, but with little context the lesser-known offerings get lost), but staff are well-versed and happy to help.

The ambience is cozy, conducive to conversation; no tvs (hallelujah). Good for romantic dinners as well as for business meals, it's just a tasteful, elegant, unpretentious dining room with lovely touches (dessert amuse, gratis sparkling, well-appointed WCs, etc).

There are also excellent bar offerings--their Quebecois is the best almost--Manhattan out there, for my money--and a good late-night menu. It's a neighborhood favorite, a Boston favorite, and there's a reason (well, many of them) that Bergamot is rated #9 *in the country* by Zagat's for New American Cuisine.

How I Successfully Got Rid of Bed Bugs Naturally

Two words – essential, oils.

It’s possible to use entirely natural methods to rid your living quarters and your belongings of bed bugs, all it requires is a lot of patience, a lot of cleaning and complete, thorough dedication.

You need to clean out all your clothes, either by washing them with natural insecticides, washing them in hot water or by steam cleaning them.

You need to vacuum, and vacuum all over again, all corners of your house, your furniture and your carpets.

Daylilies are one of the most commonly grown perennials, so chances are you have some of these delicious beauties growing in your garden. Both the flower buds and petals are edible. If you are willing to sacrifice a few buds, pick them when they are 1-3” long and still mostly green. Sauté them like asparagus, chop and add them to salads, or use them to make hot and sour soup.

The open blossoms make an elegant presentation for special occasions when stuffed with fruit or tuna salad. Just make sure to remove the stamens and pistil before stuffing. The petals can also be sliced and added to dishes as a garnish.

PinksDianthus

If you bury your nose in a bouquet of Dianthus, you’ll notice the flowers have a sweet, spicy scent that’s similar to cloves. The flavor they impart to food is similar, which makes them a good candidate for adding to all sorts of desserts. They also add a unique flavor to basmati rice and spicy cocktails. Most often, you will find the flowers acting as candied accents for cupcakes, ice cream, or fruity salads. When preparing the petals for eating, trim away the bitter tasting white ends so they don’t ruin the sweet flavor.

We offer a number of Dianthus cultivars but suggest those with single blossoms like the ‘Paint the Town’ series to use in cooking. Because flowers should be consumed in moderation, these smaller blossoms are better proportioned for use in recipes.

You could use them as an edible garnish on a dessert plate, chop and add them to baked goods or jams, or boil them down with simple syrup to make a flavorful syrup for drizzling over crepes and ice cream.

Did you know that the huge rose of Sharon shrub you enjoy blooming in your landscape every August has edible flowers? Luckily, the blossoms are produced so abundantly that there are plenty to enjoy both in the garden and in your kitchen. Varieties that bear single flowers work best. Harvest them early in the day just before they are fully open for the freshest taste.

The flavor will vary from slightly sweet to citrusy or nutty depending on the variety. Pluck out the center parts of the flower and use them whole as a stuffed flower (as we suggested with daylilies) or toss the sliced petals in a fresh fruit salad. The petals may also be dried and used to flavor tea.

Essential Oil Recipes for Bath Salts

#1 – Lavender – Dead Sea Salt Relaxer (For Stressful Days!)

Our first recipe includes one of my favorite essential oil, lavender, which is likely in the collection of every true aromatherapy practitioner reading this right now. What you might not have is Dead Sea Salt, which is taken from the famous body of water with the same name. It is full of magnesium, bromide, iodine, sulfur, potassium, calcium sodium, and zinc.

These minerals bring the powers to soothe your skin, relax the muscles, strengthen the bones, and accelerates the healing process. This is a lot of strength for one ingredient, albeit an important one.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Epsom salts
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup Dead Sea Salts
  • 30 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 2 Tablespoons of preferred carrier oil (jojoba, almond, coconut)

Directions

In a large glass bowl mix your Epsom and Dead Sea salts. Add the baking soda and mix well. Next, drip the lavender oil over the mixture as you stir letting it coat every grain. Finally, add the carrier and mix one final time. Store in an airtight container out of the sunlight.

#2 – Flexible Bath Salt Recipe

Most of us have our favorite scents and, if you are anything like me they change from blend to blend. That’s why this recipe is so much fun. You can use it for all kinds of purposes. For example, if you are looking to ease your muscles after a good workout divide the allotted essential oil drops between lavender, chamomile, and eucalyptus.

Know the strength of your oils and divide accordingly. Eucalyptus is strong so I would put less of that in comparison to the other two. If you are not familiar with creating blends start small and let it grow from there. Keep a journal so you can go back and recreate a scented recipe you love or expand on another that might need work.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 1 cup kosher salt
  • ½ cup of baking soda
  • 20 drops essential oils

Directions

Mix all of the dry ingredients in a glass bowl. You should never use a metal bowl when mixing essential oils. Add your oils as you mix the dry ingredients. For my suggested recipe above I would use 6 drops Eucalyptus, 12 drips lavender, and 12 drops of chamomile.

#3 – Relaxing Bath Salts Recipe

As I’ve said in many articles, lavender oil is relaxing. But, I am a writer and, as a person in that position, it’s always good to supply sources. The Independent reported that scientist in Japan, at Kagoshima University found that the linalool in lavender essential oil can ease anxiety. This is something users have known for centuries.

Yet, lavender isn’t the only powerful relaxer in this blend. Frankincense has also been proven to bring a sense of calm and relaxation to the user. It’s no wonder both of them were thrown together for one soothing blend.

Directions

Drip the essential oils over the salts in a glass bowl as you mix them. Store them in a glass container.

#4 – Petals and Salts

While we love plants there are times when we receive or purchase cut flowers. They smell wonderful and add something bright to every room. Unfortunately, they eventually die and the petals wither and dry. They can be used from that point even further in several ways, bath salts being one of them.

The recipe calls for a specific type of petal but you can use whatever dried flower petals you have lying around your home. Of course, be sure to research when substituting ingredients for any potential risks. You can include any scents you like in this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • ½ cup coarse grain salts (sea or kosher)
  • ⅓ cup of baking soda
  • ¼ cup dried lavender or rose petals
  • 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oils

Directions

In a glass bowl combine the dry ingredients well and then add your chosen essential oils one drop at a time while you stir the mixture.

#5 – Luxurious Lavender Gifts For All (Save Some For Me!)

If you are going to go through the trouble of mixing salts and scenting them just right, wouldn’t it be selfish of you to keep it all for yourself. This recipe calls for a quantity of four 8 oz ball jars so you can make one batch and hand it to your closest friends or multiply it and create an amazing bridal shower gift.

Of course, you can keep it all for yourself because you love the way it enhances your bathing experience. The mixture of salts, lavender essential oil, dried lavender, and petals will be difficult to give away.

Ingredients

  • Four 8 oz. Ball Jars
  • 20 oz. Epsom Salt, extra fine
  • 3 oz. Pink Sea Salt, medium
  • 3 oz. Pink Sea Salt, coarse
  • 2 mL (about 40 drops) Bulgarian Lavender Essential Oil
  • 1 Tbsp. Dried Lavender
  • 3 Tbsp. Cornflower Petals

Directions

Mix the salts well in a large glass bowl. Add the dried lavender and cornflower petals and blend. Then add the lavender oil while mixing. Once it is all blended divide equally into the Ball jars for storage or gifts.

#6 – Eucalyptus Lavender Soak

We have discussed lavender and it’s ability to relax but there are other benefits to this lovely scent. It heals burns, treats insomnia, depression, and is a natural pain reliever. Eucalyptus is another popular oil, not so much for it’s scent, but for the incredible benefits it brings to any blend. Derived from a tree in Australia, one wonders what can’t this oil do?

It fights cold and flu, helps heal wounds, improves cognitive functioning, eases muscle and joint pain, stimulates the brain, does wonders for your skin, and fights fungi and bacteria. When added to the powers of lavender oil, this bath salt blend can achieve a lot.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup Himalayan pink salt
  • ¼ cup Epsom salt
  • 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
  • 4 drops lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

Directions

Mix your salts in a glass bowl. Add your lavender oil and then the eucalyptus. The final step is to add the almond oil to seal it all in.

#7 – Sleepytime Bath Salts

Getting to sleep isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do for some of us. We can take over the counter medications but I prefer to try natural remedies before loading myself up with a bunch of drugs. Soaking in a hot tub has been shown to be a perfect way to feel sleepy at bedtime.

When looking at the ingredients it’s no surprise that this recipe is designated to help you fall asleep faster. Studies have shown that cedarwood has sedative effects when inhaled. Guess what? So does orange, the sweet and the bitter kind. Together, you can kiss insomnia good-bye.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup Himalayan pink salt
  • ¼ cup Epsom salt
  • 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
  • 4 drops cedarwood essential oil
  • 3 drops orange essential oil

Directions

Mix the dry ingredients in a glass bowl. Add your essential oils and then the sweet almond. Store in a glass jar. Make sure to only use these salts at night since orange oil has phototoxic effects.

#8 – Sore Muscle Bath Soak (For Quick Relief)

Relaxation and sleep are not the only reasons why someone might want to soak in a hot tub. It’s a great remedy for sore muscles, which can be caused by working out or disorders like chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and hypothyroidism.

Whatever the reason why we have sore muscles might be, sometimes we just want relief. That’s what this recipe was designed to accomplish. Frankincense is an anti-inflammatory, which helps with swelling. Chamomile fights inflammation as well. Together they are tough to beat.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Epsom Salt
  • 2 tablespoons jojoba oil
  • 4 drops frankincense
  • 3 drops Roman chamomile

Directions

Put your Epsom salts in a glass bowl. Add the frankincense and chamomile and mix well. Then add your jojoba and store in a glass jar sealed tightly.

#9 – Bath Salts for Menstrual Cramps

Ladies, we all know how these feel and taking a hot bath is sometimes the only way to feel relief. On top of the submerging ourselves into hot water, the addition of powerful essential oils can bring added comfort.

Essential oils have been used to alleviate menstrual pain and has been proven effective.

Add your essential oils to the Epsom salts in a glass bowl. Then coat with the jojoba oil and store in a cool, dry, and dark place.

#10 – Blissful Bath Salt

There are few things more satisfying than feeling a sense of euphoria or just calmness after a rough day. Baths are a perfect way to unwind from the stress of day to day life. Between the house, the kids, the job, and the everything else that comes along with life, sometimes we just want to lay back, close our eyes and let it all melt away.

By mixing frankincense, sandalwood, and bergamot, these salts will help you reach that sense of serenity.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Dead Sea Salt
  • 2 tablespoons jojoba oil
  • 3 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 2 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 2 drops bergamot essential oil

Directions

Put your Dead Sea salts in a glass bowl. Add one essential oil at a time while mixing the salt to ensure it is coated. The final step is to mix in the jojoba for coating.

#11 – Energizing Bath Salts

On the opposite end of the spectrum, sometimes we want to be uplifted, particularly when we are starting our day. The fizzing of the salts in your bath water should help do the trick but so will the essential oils that were chosen for this recipe. Between grapefruit, peppermint, and lavender, you should get out of the tub feeling invigorated.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup Dead Sea Salt
  • ¼ cup Himalayan Pink salt
  • 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
  • 3 drops grapefruit essential oil
  • 2 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil

Directions

First mix your salts in a glass bowl. Then add your essential oils, one at a time. Finish it off with the sweet almond oil.

#12 – Essential Oil Spa Bath Recipe

If we could, we would visit a spa every day. But, the reality for most of us is that spa days are a treat opposed to the norm. Even if you can go to a spa often, isn’t it nice to get that same treatment at home? You can with this bath salt recipe.

The combination of ylang-ylang and bergamot essential oils give off an aroma of beauty while the mixture of salts along with with flower petals give it that little extra something.

Ingredients

  • Bamboo box
  • ⅓ cup Epsom salt
  • ⅓ cup Himalayan pink salt
  • ⅓ cup dried butterfly pea flowers
  • 5 drops bergamot essential oil
  • 3 drops ylang-ylang essential oil

Directions

Mix salts in a glass bowl. Add the butterfly pea flowers and your essential oils. Blend well and store in the bamboo box.

#13 – Grace and Love Bath Salts

This salt blend is great for nice nights with your significant other or if you are just looking for an uplifting scent to finish off your day. Geranium and orange are both strong essential oils so we recommend using in the evening due to the phototoxicity of citrus oils.

Ingredients

  • Bamboo box
  • ⅓ cup Epsom salt
  • ⅓ cup Himalayan pink salt
  • ⅓ cup dried butterfly pea flowers
  • 4 drops geranium
  • 4 drops orange

Directions

Mix salts in a glass bowl. Add the butterfly pea flowers and your essential oils. Blend well and store in the bamboo box.

#14 – Green Peacefulness Bath Salts

The color green is calming in itself, so adding it to the name has already made me feel a little more at ease. With essential oils like lime and lemongrass added to this recipe, the scent it gives off will not only give you the feeling of green but peacefulness as well.

Ingredients

  • Bamboo box
  • ⅓ cup Epsom salt
  • ⅓ cup Himalayan pink salt
  • ⅓ cup dried butterfly pea flowers
  • 4 drops lime essential oil
  • 4 drops lemongrass essential oil

Directions

Mix salts in a glass bowl. Add the butterfly pea flowers and your essential oils. Blend well and store in the bamboo box.

#15 – Oriental Spa Bath Salts

The Far East has always been a source of herbal remedies and practices that enhance our health naturally. This recipe includes the scents of jade lemon and jasmine to create a spa treatment that makes you feel like you are in an Oriental spa instead of your own bathroom.

Ingredients

  • Bamboo box
  • ⅓ cup Epsom salt
  • ⅓ cup Himalayan pink salt
  • ⅓ cup dried butterfly pea flowers
  • 6 drops jade lemon essential oil
  • 3 drops jasmine essential oil

Directions

Mix salts in a glass bowl. Add the butterfly pea flowers and your essential oils. Blend well and store in the bamboo box.

#16 – Orange Bath Salts

Orange has long been known for its cleansing qualities as well as it’s ability to brighten up any mood. It also works as an anti-inflammatory and does all it can to battle depression. This recipe gets a double dose of orange power with soap and essential oil.

Ingredients

  • 3 teaspoons (15 ml) sweet almond oil
  • 1 teaspoon orange essential oil
  • 300g Dead Sea salt

Directions

Put your Dead Sea salt into a glass bowl. Coat with essential oil and mix well. Add the orange soap dye and stir. Then cover with the sweet almond oil.

#17 – Flowery Bath Salt Recipe

Florals are not just for women anymore. Everyone can enjoy the scents of flowers when they take a bath. This particular recipe take the powers of Geranium, which smells like roses, and adds Elderflower heads for something different.

Ingredients

  • 3 teaspoon (15ml) Rosehip Seed Oil
  • ⅔ teaspoon lime essential oil
  • ⅓ teaspoon geranium essential oil
  • 300g Dead Sea salt
  • A few heads of dried Elderflowers

Directions

In a glass bowl mix your dry ingredients well. Then add your essential oils. Coat well and finish off with the Rosehip oil.

#18 – More Orange Bath Salts

Would you say that Orange is a popular scent? Well, you wouldn’t be too far off if you made that observation. Citrus oils are popular but orange has a sweeter scent, which makes it a favorite of aromatherapy practitioners. The addition of orris root helps with inflammation.

Ingredients

  • 12 tablespoons Epsom salts
  • 3 tablespoons Orris root
  • 6 tablespoons dried orange peel
  • 3 drops orange essential oil
  • 9 drops geranium essential oil

Directions

Put Epsom salts in a glass bowl and mix with Orris root. Add dried orange peel and top off with each essential oil. Blend thoroughly and store in a cool, dry place.

#19 – Bath Salts Recipe for Men! (But Women Can Use It Too!)

While this recipe was created to appeal to the aromatic preferences of men, we believe anyone could use this blend for some serious healing. Ginger is wonderful for fighting infections and inflammation. It also relieves anxiety, which is more often than not the central reason for taking a bath. Lemongrass is also an anti-inflammatory, which makes this blend great for easing pain.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons (15 ml) sweet almond oil
  • 18 drops Lemongrass essential oil
  • 9 drops ginger essential oil
  • 300g Dead Sea Salt

Directions

Put your salts into a glass bowl and add each of the essential oils, one at a time, while stirring. Finish it off with the sweet almond oil and store in a cool, dry container when not using.

#20 – Vanilla Musk Bath Salts

As we near the end of our list we have a new scent, which is warm and sometime synonymous with ice cream. When we inhale vanilla essential oil it gives us a warm feeling of relaxation. Musk essential oil adds to the depth of the scent as we sit in a tub.

This is the only recipe that included oatmeal, which gives the bath water a nice mily feel.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Epsom salts
  • ¼ cup Sea salt
  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon finely ground oatmeal
  • 6 drops vanilla essential oil
  • 6 drops musk essential oil
  • Red food coloring
  • Yellow food coloring (choose skin safe food coloring)
  • Sealable glass container

Directions

Put the salts into a glass bowl and mix well. Add the baking soda and blend. Next, add your essential oils, and you can add or subtract a drop to make the scent your own. You can divide this batch in sections and color with the food coloring. Orange, yellow, and red layered in a glass jar would look nice on your bathroom shelf. Blue and green would look good too.

#21 – Sparkly Spa

Our final recipe adds a bit of fun in the mix. You have your typical ingredients, salts and scents, but we add a little visual effect for a decorative look on your shelf and in your bath water.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • ½ cup Himalayan pink salt
  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 15 drops grapefruit essential oil
  • 10 drops Gentle Baby essential oil
  • Extra something: Cosmetic-grade glitter

Directions

Mix your dry ingredients in a glass bowl. Add one essential oil at a time. Store in a Ball jar or glass container. I would still keep it out of the sunlight not matter how sparkly it looks near the window. UV rays can damage your essential oils.


There are a few things you need to keep in mind before using essential oils to help you with vertigo:

  • You should try to keep undiluted oils away from your skin. Sometimes direct contact of undiluted oils can cause pain, inflammation, and irritation to the skin.
  • Some essential oils cause abdominal pain and discomfort when ingested. So, make sure you are applying them correctly.
  • Some people who have respiratory conditions may find it difficult to tolerate strongly scented oils.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have low immunity, you should contact your doctor or aromatherapy provider to know if using essential oils is okay for you or not.

Step 4 | Purchase fresh ingredients

Once you have a solid idea of what is required, head to the supermarket. The good news is that this lemonade does not require complex ingredients or exotic supplements.

You can easily find lemon juice, maple syrup and distilled water in your local grocery store. Make sure that all the fruits and are as fresh as possible before preparing the mixture.

Furthermore, you are advised not to make more than a day’s supply. The mix can go bad quickly even when refrigerated.


Essential Oil Recipes to Treat and Prevent Acne Outbreaks

It is very easy to make your own acne treatment at home using some essential oils. As a general rule of thumb, you should use 10-12 drops of essential oil for every 1 ounce (30 ml) of carrier oil. If you use a combination of essential oils in your recipe, you should adjust the amount accordingly.

To make a natural treatment for getting rid of pimples, pustules, and unblocking pores to treat acne, this is what you should do:

  • In 1 ounce (30 ml) of carrier oil, mix 3-4 drops of tea tree oil, 3-4 drops of lavender oil, and 3-4 drops of any other essential oil from my above list.
  • Pour the home remedy in a dark glass bottle and gently shake to mix all the oils.
  • Apply 2 or 3 drops of the essential oil acne remedy to your skin and gently massage (make sure to wash your hands thoroughly beforehand).
  • Repeat this every morning and evening until your acne has gone for good.

This recipe also works for treating red marks and scars left after an acne outbreak, and can be used for treating stretch marks as well.

Natural Homemade Skin Treatment to Stop Skin Breakouts, Acne and Pimples

This recipe contains witch hazel which is an all-natural toner and astringent, and is regularly used as an acne treatment. It balances skin’s oil production, reduces the inflammation on pimples, helps to clear blackheads and remove whiteheads naturally.

For each 1 oz witch hazel you will need to add:
4 drops tea tree essential oil
4 drops lavender essential oil

Add the essential oils to the witch hazel. Apply to the skin with a cotton ball as needed or use a spray bottle to spray the affected area (you don’t need to rinse it off).

You can also make some great face masks using essential oils to prevent outbreaks of acne and keep your skin looking healthy and pimple-free. These face masks contain other ingredients that are beneficial for treating acne, such as aloe vera, baking soda and honey.

Add a few drops of turmeric essential oil to a cream or oil-based moisturizer (such as argan oil) and use it as you would your regular moisturizer.

How to use Antibacterial Essential Oils

Once you have chosen your antibacterial essential oil or oils there are a number of ways that you can use them depending on the illness and bacteria that you are trying to treat. I will note here that there are many ‘antibacterial recipes’ that call for the internal use of essential oils but we can not recommend using essential oils internally unless you are under the supervision of your doctor.

1) Inhalation

All of the antibacterial oils mentioned in the article can be inhaled directly from the bottle or via a diffuser. If you are trying to get rid of a respiratory infection, then you can add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to a bowl of hot water or the sink, cover your head and shoulders and inhale deeply.

2) Topical Application

Combine a few drops of your chosen oil or oils with a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba and apply the oil to the affected area of your body. Massaging the oil into your abdomen is also a great way to help fight internal infections.

You can also apply some diluted essential oils to help treat common skin infections like acne or even warts.

3) Mouthwash

Certain oils like clove and thyme are excellent for relieving oral pain and killing bacterial infections in the gums. Add a few drops to a glass of water and use the oil as a mouthwash being careful not to swallow any. Alternatively, you can add some of the oil to a cotton ball and apply it to the affected part of your mouth.

4) Body Soak

Add 6 to 8 drops of your antibacterial essential oil to the bathtub. Lay back, relax and let the soothing, healing properties of the oil wash over you.
